Carnivorous plant growing in a rosette of upright tubes veined with maroon. The colour deepens in autumn. The tubes are lined with hairs which prevent insects which fall in, getting out.
USES: Wetland and bog plant for cool-winter areas; interesting and unusual indoor plant.
Plant in acid soil, ideally equal parts sphagnum moss or peat moss, horticultural sand, and perlite. Any potting mix needs to be extremely low in phosphorus and nitrogen so don't fertilise these plants. Plants need a cool winter, at least one month of low-single digit temperatures, and can survive snow and ice.
Keep the soil wet through the growing seasons, the easiest way is to sit the pot in a saucer of rainwater. In mid-autumn, drain the saucer and keep the soil damp until spring, to give the plant a rest.
